Can you cure Diabetes? By Dr Ryizan Nizar

The short answer is NO(not at least at the moment)!

This is something I get asked a lot. And there is so much misinformation regarding this online. There are a lot of people who claim they have found amazing cures for diabetes and unfortunately a lot of people do fall into these myths. Some even end up spending a lot of money.

I will break my answer into two.

Type 1 Diabetes

Currently, there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. However, a small proportion of people with Type 1 diabetes do get Pancreatic transplants which technically cures their diabetes. However, this does not cure their diabetes complications and they will also have to take anti-rejection medication for life which in itself have some really severe side effects.

There is no other cure available for type 1 Diabetes at the moment. And if you have Type 1 Diabetes and you stop your Insulin without consulting your diabetes doctor it could have devastating consequences in the short and long-term (Soon after diagnosis a very small proportion of people with Type 1 diabetes can sometimes temporarily come off insulin due to something called ‘Honeymooning’.  But this should be done in close consultation with your diabetic team).

Type 2 Diabetes

In terms of type 2 diabetes, there is no cure currently available. But you can send your Type 2 Diabetes into REMISSION by losing a significant amount of weight.

However, a diagnosis of Type 2 is for life.

Once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes you should at minimum have your HbA1c checked twice a year, preferably three times a year even if you are not taking any medications. To go on without checking HbA1c would be very dangerous as diabetes is a silent killer. Its effects usually take over 10-15 years to develop and most of the complications are irreversible.

How can My DiabetesConnect App Help?

The App helps by bringing all your Diabetes related tests in one place. Having access to your data and presenting it in a way you can understand is the biggest need and this App does just that.

And the BMI/Weight Tile is a great way to keep track of your weight/BMI over months/years.

The App will also calculate your ideal body weight once you enter your height and ethnicity. So you know exactly what you need to aim for!

If you have Type 2 Diabetes then achieving your ideal body weight is a great way to send your Diabetes into remission. Check out the following video on how to use the BMI tile in the App.
